About the Collection

The Records of the Church of the Holy Cross, 1788-1942, collection contains a bound volume and loose papers associated to what was then known as the Claremont Church in Stateburg, South Carolina. Established in 1788, the church was renamed the Church of the Holy Cross in 1849 when construction began on a new church building.

The Record of Claremont Church, 1808-1865, is a bound volume documenting lists of communicants, baptisms for infants and adults, burials for confederate soldiers and church members, confirmations and marriages performed. Each section includes entries for both enslaved people, freed persons, and white church members. Entries for enslaved persons include the names of their parents or mother, age, name of their slave owner or if they are identified as a free person.

The loose papers in the collection consist of burials for church members and confederate soldiers, a letter requesting admittance into the church for enslaved persons and a document on the christening of children.
