About the Collection
The James W. Miles Papers, ca. 1840-1875, collection contains loose papers belonging to James Warley Miles (1818-1875). A Charleston S.C. Protestant Episcopal minister and educator, Miles studied law with Henry Bailey, attorney general of South Carolina, but left that profession for the ministry. He spent several years as a missionary in Constantinople, and after returning to South Carolina served as minister in various churches include St. Michael’s and Grace Church in Charleston and Camden, S.C. He was also a professor of language and literature at the College of Charleston and librarian there. He read numerous languages including Hebrew, Latin, and Sanskrit.
Loose papers within the collection include a list of laws between 1740-1840 for enslaved persons and their allies and a list of offenses that result in exclusion from the clergy such as robbing, piracy, stealing, witchcraft and assisting fugitive slaves.
