About the Collection
In 1944, the Civil Services Committee—a committee organized by the Carolina Arts Association—was tasked with conducting a survey of the architecture in the city of Charleston, with the survey project called This is Charleston. This collection contains the This is Charleston’s nearly 900 survey cards and photographs of structures in the city. The front of the survey card was used to collect quantifiable data about each building, including assessing its level of value. The back of the card was often used as a space for additional comments. Three committee members whose comments appear most often on the back of the surveys are Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, Samuel Gaillard Stoney and Albert Simons.
