About the Collection

The Vanderhorst Family Papers, 1689-1942 collection contains two bound journals kept by members of the Vanderhorst family. As residents of Charleston, Christ Church Parish and Kiawah Island, South Carolina, these journals consist of estate records for Kiawah Plantation.

The Kiawah Plantation Book, 1854-1861 records the names of the enslaved men, women, and children on the plantation, documenting their allowances and the number of blankets given out to them. Other details include payments to the overseer and information related to crops and livestock. The Kiawah Stock Account Book, 1877-1882 records information on the livestock kept and sold on the plantation, a list of plantation expenses and account statements for the overseer Quash Stevens.

Also included in the collection is a release for Hope Plantation and eighty-five enslaved persons owned by William Elliot Morris and Anna E. Morris.
