About the Collection

The John Ravenel Estate Book, 1862-1870, collection contains a bound volume on the inventory and appraisement of the estate of John Ravenel, deceased. A Charleston, South Carolina merchant and businessman, John Ravenel (1793-1862) married Anna Elizabeth Ford in 1818. Together, they had five children: Alfred Ford Ravenel (1822-1893), Francis Gualdo Ravenel (1825-1862), St. Julien Ravenel (1819-1882) Gabriella Ravenel (b. 1827) who married J. Motte Alston (d. 1886), and Frances Harrison Ravenel (b. 1829) who married Elias Horry Frost (1827-1897). The estate book contains various accounts for members of the Ravenel family with Alfred F. Ravenel (1857-1912) as executor. Other accounts include those of R.N Gourdin, M.A. Pringle, Mrs. Frances E.H. Frost, and Miss E.P. Huger. Details include references to stocks and bonds, a store on East Bay Street in Charleston, S.C., a house and lot on the Battery in Charleston, enslaved people who are mentioned by name, as well as furniture, wine and silver.
