The Diary of Julius M. Bacot, 1886 contains daily diary entries discussing Julius Bacot's work as a lawyer, the weather, illness, and his social engagements with members of other Charleston families such as the Manigaults, Lowndes, Rhetts and Ravenels. Other entries talk about weddings, deaths, hunting trips, and property claims following the Civil War. The diary includes entries on the Protestant Episcopal Church Convention in which discussion formed around the admittance of African American ministers which was ultimately denied. Finally, Julius Bacot writes about the 1886 Charleston Earthquake in which he records the event as it happens and the damages, anxieties, aftershocks, and relief efforts following it.

Acting as administrator for the estate, the book includes notices for demands against the estate, appraisals for items and belongings, including an enslaved woman named Nancy, and a written statement regarding the distribution of Thomas Bacot's shares to other members of the Bacot family.
In this six-page, handwritten letter, Warren Hubert Moise outlines the important events in the early life of his father, Edwin Warren Moise (b. 1810). Topics include his marriage to Priscilla Lopez and their move from Charleston, South Carolina to Woodville, Mississippi, the birth of three children and Priscilla’s death, his move to New Orleans, and his change of profession from medicine to the law. W. H. Moise writes about his father’s appointment as Attorney General of Louisiana, and then as a Confederate Judge in 1861 by Confederate President Jefferson Davis. He describes E. W. Moise's return to New Orleans at the end of the Civil War and foreshadows the family’s destitution and dispersion after his parents’ deaths.

Plowden Weston's Plantation Journal is part of the Weston family papers collection. Plowden Weston came to the colony of South Carolina from Warwickshire, England in 1757, and he bought Laurel Hill Plantation and adjoining lands in 1775. This journal contains lists of items shipped to Waccamaw Plantations (Wandow, Laurel Hill, Holly Hill, Waccamaw) and accounts of crops (rice, cotton) transported and sold in various Lowcountry area wharves, 1802-1820. Items shipped to plantations include tools, textiles, seeds, sundries, medicines, etc. Journal includes other ephemera such as correspondences, bank deposits, financial accounts, formulas, instructions. Items distributed to enslaved people often appear with lists of their names.

The Mouzon Plat Book surveys lands held by various individuals and families in Craven County [now in parts of Berkeley, Charleston, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties], Colleton County and Berkeley County in South Carolina. Plats are drawn in pencil and ink. Book includes an index at the beginning and at the end are two pages of accounts and also lands to be resurveyed for the estate of Henry Mouzon Jr.
The journal of George Chicken, written during the Yamasee War, documents a march across South Carolina to various Cherokee settlements and treaty negotiations for peace and alliances against the Creek tribes from January 1715 to February 1716. The journal also includes the correspondence of James Alford and Captain James Woodward. Part of the way through the journal, Chicken flipped and reversed his use of the book causing pages to be out of date order.
The Roslin Plantation journal, kept by Archibald Simpson Johnston, documented enslaved people and slave labor on an antebellum plantation for two years (1813-1815). The journal documents correspondence, equipment, planting and harvesting, livestock, slaves and supplies related to the plantation. There are detailed descriptions of tasks and number of enslaved people working each task, particularly tasks regarding growing cotton and rice and maintainining those fields.

Description:
This is the plantation register by Mathurin Guerin Gibbs (1788-1849) for Rice Hope Plantation (January 1, 1824 to December 1844) and Jericho Plantation (December 1844 to 1875). Gibbs, a lawyer before becoming a planter, used the first several pages of the manuscript dating January 1824 to May 1829 for summarizing legal cases. The plantation register primarily documents daily labor activities on the plantation including cultivation and harvesting of staple crops such as corn, cotton (Sea Island Cotton and Santee black seed cotton), rice and potatoes, livestock, and building fences. Gibbes also writes about the use and management of slave labor, the movement of enslaved people between the plantation and Charleston, and selling and purchasing of enslaved people. Slave names are included in portions of the register. Gibbs notes throughout the register the struggles he encounters as a planter including being unable to pay the mortgage of Rice Hope Plantation and the property going into foreclosure. Most of the entries at the end of the register are regarding slave births, slave deaths and distribution of blankets. Gibbs died in 1849 and the management of the plantation was carried out by his son.
The Direleton Plantation Memorandum Book was kept by James Ritchie Sparkman beginning in the 1850s; changes in handwriting indicate additional authors and additional uses into the 1900s. The book contains slave records. Records includes slave births, slave deaths, purchases of slaves, sales of slaves, family seperation, measurements for clothing, distribution of blankets, and labor tasks. The book also contains lists of first and last names of agricultural workers after the American Civil War and figures, likely wages paid. There are account records kept for purposes of the Internal Revenue Services, Confederate taxes and bonds, personal and agricultural work purchases, and financial transactions with B.M. Grier, Eliza S. Heriot, Dr. R.S. Heriot, A.G. Heriot (with signed receipts), M.E. Heriot (with signed receipts), and G.A. Thorne. There are transactions with other plantations recorded including Cornhill Plantation, Northampton Plantation, and Birdfield Plantation. There is information on livestock, wines removed from the plantation, and rice sales.
The Arthur B. Flagg Journal and Commonplace Book is comprised of information relating to rice and other agricultural farming on the Brookgreen Plantation post Civil War. Allston explicitly notes accounting related to Matanza Plantation, later known as Chicora Wood. Other account records do not explicitly state plantation sites.

The Robert F.W. Allston Receipt Book, 1823-1863, records receipts received by Robert Allston for payments made to numerous overseers, carpenters and family members. Examples of receipts found in the book include wages for overseers at Nightingale Hall Plantation, Exchange Plantation and Matanza Plantation, later known as Chicora Wood, as well as purchases of enslaved persons and travel expenses.
Diary kept by Rabbi Jacob S. Raisin entitled, "Light and Shadows." The diary is comprised of personal entries and correspondence bound together to create a chronological log of events during Jacob S. Raisin's life and Rabbinical career between the years of 1905-1910.

The Robert F.W Allston Account Book, 1860-1861, documents payments, a recipe to help cure rabies, stocks for Nightingale Hall and Chicora Wood Plantations and the names, births and deaths of enslaved people. The book also includes diary entries for when Robert Allston visited Manassas, Virginia at the Battle of Bull Run during the Civil War, recording conversations he had about the battle, the atmosphere of the army camps and the death of General Barnard E. Bee.
Notes on Charles Sumner's Lecture on White Slavery in the Barbary States, 1847, is a bound journal kept by a member of the Allston family in which they summarize the lecture given by Charles Sumner at the Boston Mercantile Library Association. The lecture discusses the Missouri Compromise, the "peculiar institution of the south," the history of slavery by the nations of antiquity, the importation of enslaved people into the English world, a timeline of slavery in the United States and Sumner's opinions of slavery as being cruel and sinful.
The Account Journal, 1774-1777, was written by an unknown author recording financial accounts, tasks performed by enslaved persons, the planting of indigo, cotton, rice and corn and numerous memorandums between Paul Villepontoux and Peter Marion. A few journal entries reference enslaved persons who ran away from the plantations as well as verses pertaining to freedom and General George Washington. Journal contains entries from a second use, which are written upside down and interspersed with the first use.
Holograph manuscript with annotations and corrections written by Gabriel Edward Manigault, curator of the College of Charleston Museum, for publication in the Proceedings of the Elliott Society. Manigault, an 1852 graduate of the College of Charleston, became curator of the museum in 1873. The manuscript describes the capture of a Right Whale in Charleston harbor in January 1880, a description of the whale, the steps taken to preserve the specimen for exhibit at the College of Charleston Museum, and descriptions taken from published sources describing similar animals that had been sighted along the American coast and elsewhere beginning in the early 18th century. The Elliott Society was a natural history society established in Charleston, South Carolina and allied closely with the College of Charleston throughout its existence in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
Records chiefly consist of membership rolls for volunteer fire companies of Charleston (S.C.) including the Eagle Fire Engine Company, the Charleston Fire Engine Co., the Vigilant Fire Engine Co., Marion Fire Co., Aetna Fire Co., Washington Fire Co., Hope Fire Co., Charleston Fire Company of Axemen, Palmetto Fire Co., German Fire Co., and the Phoenix Fire Company. Also included is a printed blank form that certifies the bearer is an active firefighter and therefore exempt from Confederate military service. Printed on the certificate are two images of fire engines.
Meeting minutes volume kept by the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Board of Trustees, 1916-1928. The entries in this volume concern all discussions regarding synagogue business, finances, memberships. The minutes also discuss supporting troops during World War I, as well as correspondences and meetings with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and preparations for the 100th Anniversary of the Reform Judaism in America.

The album also includes a number of transcribed portions of texts and quotations from various literary figures such as Lord Byron, William Shakespeare, Alexander Pope, and John Milton.
Organized in Charleston, SC, about 1798, the Irish Volunteers Company included many prominent members of the Hibernian Society who served as officers. As part of the 28th Regiment of the South Carolina Militia, the Irish Volunteers saw active duty in the War of 1812, the Seminole War and the Mexican War. During the American Civil War they became Company K, First Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers of the Confederate States of America Army. Notable postwar service included patrol of the Mexican border from attacks by Pancho Villa in 1916 and volunteer service in WWI as the 105th Ammunition Train. The collection contains a typescript copy of "The History of the Irish Volunteers Company" (1798-1836) by F.M. Salley, and typescript copies of minutes from 1884-1901 and 1915-1929. Typescripts were copied from the originals as part of W.P.A. projects in 1935-1937. Original pagination can be seen in the margins of the typescripts.
The minutes cover all the special and regular meetings of the organization. Members attending are listed and there are various lists throughout the volume, detailing the approximately 100 or so men and women who belonged. Topics were discussed, at first, in both Yiddish and English. Dues were collected and there are frequent mentions of the need to raise more funds for specific causes, and the need to energize the populations of Charleston and South Carolina for Zionism.
