About the Collection

The Pinckney-Means Family Papers, 1701-1983, collection contains a loose paper belonging to members of the South Carolina Pinckney-Means family. Family members include Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1825), Mary Stead Pinckney (ca. 1751-1812), Thomas Pinckney (1750-1828), Edward Barnwell Means (1821-1898), and Mary Barnwell Pinckney Means (1857-1939). Pinckney-Means family plantations consist of Shifnal Plantation (Colleton County, S.C.), Toppin Plantation (Beaufort County, S.C.),

The collection holds an 1841 tripartite indenture between Eliza Means, James More Rhett and James Smith Rhett for a “schedule” of personal property and a list of twenty-five enslaved persons (named in document.)
