The first illustration is captioned 'Reception at Charleston, S.C., of the news of the election of Lincoln and Hamlin, November, 1860.' On the verso, the top page illustration is a portrait of Jefferson Davis. The bottom illustrations are the Palmetto Flag of South Carolina and the 'Stars and Bars', the first official flag of the Confederacy.
