Phillips relates various experiences including the imprisonment of his mother, Eugenia Phillips, in Washington, D.C. and on Ship Island, the hanging of William Bruce Mumford, hiding valuables from Union troops, women during the war, being a young boy at the time of the war, and reactions to General Lee's surrender.
