The Estate Book of Hannah Tait, 1836-1860, records the financial accounts for the estate of Hannah Tait with Robert F.W. Allston as executor. The beginning of the book contains the last will and testament of Hannah Tait in which she outlines her wishes for the division of her estate and paying off of debts. Tait leaves her daughter Elizabeth Shackleford her enslaved persons but if Shackleford dies, the enslaved persons are to be "sold at a private sale to humane masters." The book also includes a copy of the inventory and appraisement of the enslaved persons.
The Newton Plantation Slave Lists and Blanket Distribution Book, 1854-1861, is a bound book recording the names of enslaved persons at Newton Plantation (thought to be in Georgetown County, South Carolina). The lists include information concerning births, deaths, marriages, and purchasers of slaves. The blanket list includes names of the slaves, and the years blankets were distributed.
The Mulberry Plantation Journal for the years 1857-1860 was kept by overseer R. Meynardie who reported activities on the rice plantation. Entries note agricultural tasks, quantities of rice winnowed, sickness among slaves and individuals assinged to the nightly watch. The names of the slaves are listed throughout the journal as: Adeline, Amy, Ben, Betty, Binah, Bristol, C. Nathaniel Russell Middleton was a student (B.A. 1828; M.A. 1832), trustee and president (1857-1880) of the College of Charleston. "An Essay on Secession,' which argues for the immediate secession of South Carolina, was possibly delivered to students in 1860 during his tenure as president. 24 pages.
The Robert F.W. Allston 1860 Almanac is a Miller's Planters' and Merchants Almanac for the year 1860 repurposed as a journal. Personal entries include account pages for bushels of rice, a list of enslaved men, women and children who were born and died at Chicora Wood Plantation, the purchase of enslaved people, a presentation of a billiard table to the Lunatic Asylum, a meeting with Laymen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and work on the Georgetown Railroad.
A record of sale with the title "A Prime Gang of 27 orderly Country-raised Negroes" by Wilbur & Son. Makes notation regarding the sale at a public auction for the following slaves: Sam, Amy, Rodger, Doll, Bella, Moll, Myrcam, Phoebe, Harriet, Mary, Sye, Joe, Flora, Scipio, Daniel, Jane, Emma, High Bob, Thomas and numerous children not referenced by name. Includes associated figures in dollars and the ages and qualifications of each slave.
The Robert F.W. Allston with Robert Adger and Co. Account Book, 1860, is a journal recording household and grocery expenses for Robert Allston. Among the lists includes items for enslaved persons such as cloth and toothbrushes. Many entries also contain records of payments to specific individuals.
The Robert F.W Allston Account Book, 1860-1861, documents payments, a recipe to help cure rabies, stocks for Nightingale Hall and Chicora Wood Plantations and the names, births and deaths of enslaved people. The book also includes diary entries for when Robert Allston visited Manassas, Virginia at the Battle of Bull Run during the Civil War, recording conversations he had about the battle, the atmosphere of the army camps and the death of General Barnard E. Bee.

Chair made by slaves from Ridgley Plantation near Florence, South Carolina. The chair is made with mortise and tenon joints reinforced with square nails. The seat is of animal skin. Evidence that the legs of the chair have been shortened indicates that it was a slave's chair. Slaves were not permitted to sit higher than the master or his children.

Twenty-dollar federal gold coin belonging to Lieutenant George E. Dixon, its shape warped into a shallow "U" shape by a high-velocity projectile (bullet). First image shows one face of the coin, which retains the face of lady liberty with the date 1860. The other two images show the opposite face of the coin, which exhibits the federal eagle and shield, as well as the words "United States of America" and "Twenty D." The coin has been intentionally filed flat for roughly half of its circumference and is inscribed with the following: "Shiloh...April6, 1862...My life Preserver...G.E.D."

Possibly made of pine, approximately 1 inch thick, with cut-outs to fit in the bulkhead of the submarine. Note the rust stains on both ends where bolts had been used to secure the shelf.
