Letters of Mary Smith Grimke, wife of John Faucheraud Grimke, to her daughter, Anna Rutledge Grimke Frost (1795-1882), in Philadelphia, regarding the drowning death of her son, Benjamin (1798-1825) and his child, her grieving daughter-in-law Mary Augusta Barron Grimke (1806-1843) and the return of the bodies to Charleston, to be buried in St. Paul's cemetery. With references to settling of her husband's (?) estate, a note to her granddaughter as well and references to "Sally" (Sarah) and Angelina Grimke, especially the latter's turning to religion, attending Presbyterian services, giving up fashionable company and dress and becoming more like her sister Sarah.

Moultrie, 1826) describes the wreck of the ship Harvest off the coast of North Carolina in which Lieutenant Benjamin Grimke and his infant daughter were drowned, but which his wife and King survived; with details on their shipwreck on Boddy's Island, wreckers salvaging the ship, burial of the dead and travel to Roanoke.

Nathaniel Heyward writes his mother-in-law, Mary Barnwell, about a perilous trip from Coosaw island to Charleston aboard a leaky schooner that required "all hands constantly at the pump." He mentions that he has secured passage on the 'Georgia Packet' for a summer trip north but may have to skip Philadelphia because of news the "Yellow fever has shown itself" there. 4p.
Letter from Nathaniel Heyward to his mother describing his voyage to Philadelphia and his first few days in town. Nathaniel writes about his distaste at seeing so many people engaged in "that abominable tavern life" and describes his unassuming lodgings. 2p.
Journal entries on pages interleaved in Hoff's Agricultural Almanac (1818). Includes personal and plantation entries by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1818 April 6-May 16, with a few scattered entries in late 1818 and early 1819). The journal records daily activities on Pinckney's plantation. Pinckney not only planted cotton, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, corn, and oats, but relied heavily on fish for food. Many daily entries record the number of drumfish caught and the share of the catch (and other items) distributed to slaves. Other entries concern milk cows and curing meat. Several pages of the journal contain a list of slaves at "The Crescent," "the old Place," "the Point," and Pinckney Island.
