“Stories Collected from Slaves” by Leonarda J. Aimar is a bound volume of formerly enslaved people's stories. In her transcription, she attempted to capture the storytellers’ colloquial speech, now recognized as the Gullah language. The volume includes a list of addresses, occupations, and diseases of African Americans during their enslavement; an eye-witness account of the Battle of Secessionville on James Island during the Civil War in 1862; how enslaved people were returned to their slaveholders following the Revolutionary War; and an account of Sherman's march from Savannah, Georgia to Charleston, South Carolina during the Civil War. A formerly enslaved man, Sam, provides a detailed account of being a butler, coachman, and horse jockey. He also recounts how Union Army Major Robert Anderson took control of Fort Sumter and the events that transpired there on April 12, 1861. Other accounts include an enslaved man’s recollections of his time as a servant to a plantation overseer who sympathized with the Union during the Civil War and formerly enslaved man Jim Alston’s detailed eye-witness account of the 1876 Cainhoy Riot.
The Horlbeck Cash and Estimate Book, 1839-1849, was kept by members of the Horlbeck building and architectural business. The first half of the book is a cash book listing expenses and income. Expenses were for laborers described as white and "negroe", lime, bricks and "negro cloth." The second half of the book lists projected costs, lists of supplies, descriptions and occasional floor plans and drawings for structures to be built, repaired, and remodeled. Buildings include a dwelling house for a "Colored Man" and an Engine House.
The Horlbeck Daybook, 1835-1837, was kept by members of the Horlbeck building and architectural business. Included in the daybook are lists of work done for clients such as remodeling, repair, or construction. Buildings worked on include the jail, St. Stephen's Chapel, the Fire Master's Department, and the Poor House. The descriptions include types of materials used and the number of Black and White employees working. Black employees consist of enslaved and freed persons.
The Robert F. W. Allston Journal is an 1864 journal which contains handwritten copies of two letters written by Governor Robert Francis Withers Allston. The letters are addressed to "Mr. Morse" discussing the selling of products and to "Mr. Yates" discussing money. The rest of the journal is filled with blank pages.
The Stoney Account Book, 1837-1838, and Plantation Daybook, 1852 is a bound volume kept by the Stoney family, possibly John Stafford Stoney, in which the first half of the book documents payments for shipping, freights, wharfage and commissions from GM Thompson, Wade Hampton II, William Cunningham, Robert E. Russell, Mary Hampton, Horace Osborne & Co., John Preston, and Nesbit Manufacturing Co. The second half of the book was written by a plantation overseer at Medway Plantation in which he documents the tasks performed by enslaved people and the slaves who missed work due to sickness. The book records work done for clients White and Black employees and specifies the type of repair, remodeling or construction jobs and supplies. Black employees are comprised of enslaved persons and freed men and women.
The Paul De St. Julien Ravenel Estate Book, 1829-1841 is an estate account book kept by Henry Ravenel for the estate of Paul D. Ravenel with pages on money received, spent or payments paid, including payments for the hiring of enslaved people. The last few pages of the book are lists of slaves, referenced by first name, and the number of sheets given out.
The Stoney Family Plantation Day Book, 1872 is a bound book kept by a member of the Stoney family recording payrolls, cash accounts and general accounts for laborers, formerly slaves and now freed persons, at Medway Plantation. The second half of the book is comprised of journal entries recording weather, work completed by laborers, conditions of the plantation crops, specifically rice, and visits from family and friends.
The Estate General J.W. Allston in Account with A.W. Campbell, 1834-1857, is an account book kept for the estate of Joseph Waties Allston. The first half of the book records payments and bonds paid on behalf of J.W. Allston's estate by executor A.W. Campbell. The second half of the book records payments and bonds paid on behalf of the estate by executor Robert F.W. Allston. Payments include those for the hiring and purchasing of enslaved persons.
The Thomas Wright Bacot Jr. Estate Book is written by Robert Dewar Bacot between 1851-1854, following the death of Thomas W. Bacot in 1851. Acting as administrator for the estate, the book includes notices for demands against the estate, appraisals for items and belongings, including an enslaved woman named Nancy, and a written statement regarding the distribution of Thomas Bacot's shares to other members of the Bacot family.
The Roslin Plantation journal, kept by Archibald Simpson Johnston, documented enslaved people and slave labor on an antebellum plantation for two years (1813-1815). The journal documents correspondence, equipment, planting and harvesting, livestock, slaves and supplies related to the plantation. There are detailed descriptions of tasks and number of enslaved people working each task, particularly tasks regarding growing cotton and rice and maintainining those fields.

Entries include planting, farming and irrigation information from Cote Bas and Mepkin Plantations. Other entries concern rice, cotton, payments made for goods and services, social activities and clippings on various topics such as the Union Reform Party and voting for freedmen.
The Robert F.W.Allston Memorandum Book covers the years 1848 and 1849, documenting payments made by Robert Allston, a record of cattle on Waverly, Nightingale Hall and Matanza (later known as Chicora Wood) Plantations and mentions of enslaved people who are referenced by first name. The Robert F.W. Allston Receipt Book, 1823-1863, records receipts received by Robert Allston for payments made to numerous overseers, carpenters and family members. Examples of receipts found in the book include wages for overseers at Nightingale Hall Plantation, Exchange Plantation and Matanza Plantation, later known as Chicora Wood, as well as purchases of enslaved persons and travel expenses.
The Robert F.W Allston Account Book, 1860-1861, documents payments, a recipe to help cure rabies, stocks for Nightingale Hall and Chicora Wood Plantations and the names, births and deaths of enslaved people. The book also includes diary entries for when Robert Allston visited Manassas, Virginia at the Battle of Bull Run during the Civil War, recording conversations he had about the battle, the atmosphere of the army camps and the death of General Barnard E. Bee.
Notes on Charles Sumner's Lecture on White Slavery in the Barbary States, 1847, is a bound journal kept by a member of the Allston family in which they summarize the lecture given by Charles Sumner at the Boston Mercantile Library Association. The lecture discusses the Missouri Compromise, the "peculiar institution of the south," the history of slavery by the nations of antiquity, the importation of enslaved people into the English world, a timeline of slavery in the United States and Sumner's opinions of slavery as being cruel and sinful.
The Account Journal, 1774-1777, was written by an unknown author recording financial accounts, tasks performed by enslaved persons, the planting of indigo, cotton, rice and corn and numerous memorandums between Paul Villepontoux and Peter Marion. A few journal entries reference enslaved persons who ran away from the plantations as well as verses pertaining to freedom and General George Washington. Journal contains entries from a second use, which are written upside down and interspersed with the first use.

The John Ball Plantation Account Book, 1812-1834, is an indexed account book kept by overseers at various plantations owned by the Ball family. Overseers named are John Cox, Arthur McFarland, Samuel Lynes, Alexander McKnight, Britton Bunch, John Dickson, Thomas Fincklea, James Coward, and John Page. Of particular interest are two different accounts, one with William Deas, referred to as a "Mulatto" and the other "Free Nancy," a free black woman at Limerick Plantation who was buying and trading rice and sugar.
Miscellaneous Inventories, 1813-1817, is a bound volume kept by or for a member of the Ball family. The volume includes inventories of furniture, kitchen ware, clothing, and other household decorations such as candlesticks, bookcases, shades, looking glasses and crockery. The volume also includes a list of enslaved men, women and children divided by families.
John Ball's Office of Discount Deposit Book, 1803, is a bound volume kept by John Ball Sr. recording finances for various persons including members of the Gadsden, Prioleau and Ball families.
The Baptism Book for Enslaved People at Walworth and Leamington Plantations, 1848-1853, is a record of enslaved men, women and children who were baptized under officiating ministers Rev. William Dehon and Rev. Christopher D. Gadsden. The book also makes notations regarding enslaved persons who were dead upon receiving baptism. The last two pages are entries about the enslaved persons who underwent the rite of confirmation.
The James Simons Account Book, 1838-1854, contains financial information for Mrs. Harleston Simons in account with James Simons. Accounts include payments made for shoes, clothing, slave badges, and wages for enslaved persons. Each section includes entries for both enslaved people, freed persons, and white church members. The entries for enslaved people often include the names of their parents or mother, age, name of their slave owner or if they are free.

The Day Book for Henry Ravenel Junior, Wood Ville, 1806-1822, is a book divided into two sections. The first section lists the names of slaves and their decedents, lists of purchased slaves with name, name of previous owner, date and price, and slaves who received shoes. The second half, which appears upside down, records family events, visits to the Pineville theatre, traveling, engagements, marriages, deaths, and attendance at the Jockey Club. Also included are entries about a hunting party to capture or kill fugitive slaves, the promise of emancipation for two female "mulatto" child slaves, and a trial over the body of a slave woman who was punished to death. This book contains a second use written upside-down and back to front.

The Weehaw Plantation Journal, 1855-1861, is a journal of Weehaw Plantation, near Georgetown regarding birth, death, duties, vaccinations, tasks and allowances of enslaved people, plantation expenses, names of overseers, listings of rice crops, clothing for enslaved people, cattle, yearly accounts, tools, usage of fields, vegetable garden production, medicines, house groceries and contracts. The journal is also used as a partial diary regarding the plantation with comments on Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address, secession of South Carolina, the days leading up to the attack on Fort Sumpter, the day of the attack on Fort Sumpter, lists of enslaved persons winter and summer clothes and mentions of recruiting for Hampton's Legion for the Confederate States of America. Loose papers found within the journal contain names of enslaved persons and notes on the plantation.
The Account Book of Enslaved Persons Bequeathed to Mrs. Elizabeth B. Lowndes and Charles C. Pinckney, 1841-1857, is a bound volume composed of accounts for individual enslaved persons given by Mrs. T.M. Pinckney from Eldorado Plantation and from Mrs. E. B Lowndes' late husband. Each account lists the name of the enslaved person and slaveholder. Numerous entries contain notations on date of death or family members of that enslaved person.
The Fairfield Plantation Book, 1775-1794, is a clothing and blanketing book containing the names of enslaved persons (1773), children born at the plantation (1775), a list of clothes, blankets and tools given out to enslaved persons (1773-1775), cattle and hog inventory, lists of births and deaths of enslaved persons (1792-1797), and lists of enslaved families at Fairfield and Wappoo Plantations (1773-1797). The book contains a second use written back to front and upside down.
The Dr. Andrew Hasell Day Book, 1840-1850, records the names of patients, which plantation they live on, illnesses or injuries, and monetary charges for medical treatments by Dr. Andrew Hasell. Patients consist of many Georgetown County families and their enslaved persons. Medical treatments include amputations, tooth extractions, diagnoses of rheumatic diseases and treatment of bone fractures.
The Medical Account Book of Dr. George Paddon Bond Hasell contains medical entries on visits and treatments for Georgetown County plantation families and their slaves between 1812-1816. The book is written in both English and Latin and references enslaved people by their first name, the name of their slave owner or by using the letter "N" before their name.
The Robert F.W. Allston 1860 Almanac is a Miller's Planters' and Merchants Almanac for the year 1860 repurposed as a journal. Personal entries include account pages for bushels of rice, a list of enslaved men, women and children who were born and died at Chicora Wood Plantation, the purchase of enslaved people, a presentation of a billiard table to the Lunatic Asylum, a meeting with Laymen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and work on the Georgetown Railroad.
The Estate Book of Hannah Tait, 1836-1860, records the financial accounts for the estate of Hannah Tait with Robert F.W. Allston as executor. The beginning of the book contains the last will and testament of Hannah Tait in which she outlines her wishes for the division of her estate and paying off of debts. Tait leaves her daughter Elizabeth Shackleford her enslaved persons but if Shackleford dies, the enslaved persons are to be "sold at a private sale to humane masters." The book also includes a copy of the inventory and appraisement of the enslaved persons.
The Robert F.W. Allston Plantation Memo Book, 1859, is a Miller's Planters and Merchants Almanac repurposed as a personal account book for Robert Allston. The book records the names of the enslaved men, women and children on Chicora Wood and Nightingale Hall Plantations as well as their births, deaths and whether they were hired out by other South Carolina plantation owners. Other entries include information on crops, payments and the smoking of bacon.
The Andrew Hasell Medical Account Book between the years 1845-1856 is a book listing Dr. Andrew Hasell's visitations to ill or injured patients on various plantations throughout Georgetown County, South Carolina. His book documents the diseases, injuries, surgical procedures, medical fees and deaths of patients that include enslaved men, women, and children.
