Black and white postcard of the John Joyner Smith historic house on Bay and Wilmington Streets. U.S. Brig. Gen. Isaac Stevens used the house as his headquarters building in 1862. The house was known as “The Colonial” when it was a guesthouse in the early 20th century. Correspondence postmarked February 2, 1911.
Caption says: "Two of Beaufort's many old homes that have withstood hurricanes and war. The Means house in the foreground was built in the early 1850s by Col. Edward Means. The Crofut House in the background was built in the late 1850s by Dr. Barnwell Sams. Beaufort's oldest house is believed to have stood since the Yemassee Indian era."
