About the Collection

The Ragsdale Family Papers, 1844-ca.1920, collection consists of loose papers for the family of  plantation owner Burr Ragsdale (d.1859). Living in Chester District, South Carolina, Burr Ragsdale married Elizabeth S. Ragsdale (her maiden name was possibly Wall). Their son B.A. Ragsdale was also a planter, and his wife’s name was Jamie.

Loose papers include a bill of sale for an enslaved woman and her child, numerous receipts for the purchase of enslaved persons, and correspondence pertaining to the imprisonment of the enslaved boy Sam and a sheriff’s sale of enslaved persons.
