About the Collection
The Lazarus and Hirsch Family Papers collection is comprised of correspondence, photographs, and documents created by and related to the Lazarus and Hirsch families, two prominent Jewish families in South Carolina. Notable from the collection are several letters between Jane Levy (Hart) and Mordecai M. Levy, grandparents of Jane Lazarus Raisin; a letter to Private Benjamin Dores Lazarus Jr. from Captain Alexander Boykin; autograph albums separately owned by Mary Levy, Elizabeth Levy, and Esther Ezekiel Hart; as well as documents regarding Isaac W. Hirsch and his service throughout the Civil War. The collection also includes several daguerreotype, ambrotype, ferrotype, cabinet card and carte de visite style portraits of various members of the Lazarus and Hirsch families.
