About the Collection

This collection features correspondence from the eighteenth and nineteenth century chosen from the College of Charleston’s Special Collections holdings. This digital collection includes two letters written by Dr. John Vaughan of Philadelphia to Philip Tidyman, discussing smallpox vaccines; a letter from Frederick Garrissen of Germany to Charleston merchant William Stephen requesting that Stephen ship goods to Europe, as supplies were limited due to war; and two letters written by John Torrans to Alexander Rose regarding the purchase of a ship as well as the sale or lease of enslaved people.
