About the Collection
The Huguenot Society of South Carolina was founded in Charleston in 1885 to preserve the memory of the French Protestants who fled Europe during the 1600s and 1700s, many of whom made their way to Colonial South Carolina. The Society’s founders resolved to “prepare for publication and distribution to members … such proceedings as they deem of interest.” One hundred and twenty-three issues of Transactions of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina have since been published, the first 65 of which are represented here. Transactions contains Society business—ranging from meeting minutes to board members to rosters of general membership—along with archival memoirs of the Huguenot flight from persecution, correspondence, genealogical profiles and first-hand observations of transformative events like the World Wars.
