LCDL Digitization Guidelines

This is a revised digitization manual detailing the different type of digitization files, LCDL's suggested minimum digitization standards, our preferred naming conventions and file organization recommendations and instructions on how to use Epson's Scan Utility and Photoshop's Image Processor function.  Our digitization standards follow the standards and best practices as established by the Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiatives and are fully compliant with the accepted standards for the South Carolina Digital Library.

LCDL Metadata Schema

This is a detailed listing of all metadata fields required and/or recommended for the Lowcountry Digital Library.  This schema has been vetted against national standards and best practices and is compatible with the South Carolina Digital Library (SCDL) and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) element sets. LCDL uses the MODS metadata schema for the description of all digital objects.  Our MODS fully crosswalks to Dublin Core and is OAI compliant.

LCDL Metadata Template

The Lowcountry Digital Library batch imports metadata and digital objects through tab delimited text files.  The simplest way to create these text files is through a spreadsheet.  For our project partners, we have created several metadata templates in spreadsheet format that includes brief information about each metadata field.  We have also included in this template some of our commonly used controlled vocabularies and sample entries for each metadata field.

LCDL Transcription Guidelines

LCDL can make all collections full-text searchable, provided the item is transcribed into XML.  Some materials, such as Oral Histories, also require a PDF transcript.  These guidelines provide some simple to use techniques for ensuring your XML and PDF transcripts are properly formatted.  LCDL can also provide for you an XML transcript template if you need one for your next project.
