  • ["Dr Sir In reply to your note of 21st I am constrained to express my surprised at the intimation of a doubt by you as to whether you will receive payment of the rent to become due in January under our agreement, in current funds- knowing as you well do that the contract was made and the price adjusted with reference to the currency- While I beg no increase admit your right to demand [illegible] or to refuse currency in payment of the present years rent, I can by no means consent to retain this place for another year without an express stipulation for payment in current funds. I will retain the place for the next year with that stipulation inserted in our agreement, to which I do not think you can object. Otherwise I shall be compelled to remove"]
