  • ["Camp of 1st SCV new Berryville Va Nov 1st 1862 Jas B Heyward Esq Dr Sir I have been absent for the last month- sick- on my return day-before-yesterday several letters were handed me from you relative to the return of your boy John I am sorry I did not receive them before. I took sick as the boy might have been with you by this time, though it will be impossible to send him to Richmond in charge of any one. Persons leaving the Army for that place take the stage at Winchester for Staunton a distance of some 92 miles, there is so much travel on this route at present that it is with difficulty a white person can engage a passage and any servant would be compelled to walk. I write to ask if you are willing for John to start alone- if so I will give him money and the necessary papers to pass him. I am sorry this delay has occurred Yours Obdtly Jno W Chambers Capt Comdg Co L 1st SCV"]
