Caption says: "Two of Beaufort's many old homes that have withstood hurricanes and war. The Means house in the foreground was built in the early 1850s by Col. Edward Means. The Crofut House in the background was built in the late 1850s by Dr. Barnwell Sams. Beaufort's oldest house is believed to have stood since the Yemassee Indian era."
Postcard has two photographic images of 812 Bay Sreet taken circa 1880 and circa 1980. Tradition tells us that the tavern was raided by pirates. The walls are made of tabby, composed of clay and oyster shells, and are 16 inches thick.

Photograph postcard of a fire engine with the Beaufort Arsenal. Headquarters for the Beaufort Coast Artillery which was organized in 1776. Built of brick and tabby in 1795 and rebuilt in 1852. Old engine is the property of the Washington Fire Engine Co., organized in 1874.
