Copyright, Use, and Take-Down Policy Statements and Disclaimer

The Lowcountry Digital Library hosts digitized cultural heritage materials from institutions across the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. These digitized collections are accessible for purposes of education and research. Our contributing institutions have indicated what they know about copyright and rights of privacy, publicity, or trademark. Due to the nature of archival collections, it can be difficult to identify this information with 100% accuracy, but every reasonable effort is made to do so. We are eager to hear from any rights owners, so that we may obtain accurate information. Upon request, we’ll remove material from public view while we address a rights issue.

LCDL partner institutions make digital versions of collections accessible in the following situations:

  • They are in the public domain
  • The rights are owned by a contributing institution
  • The contributing institution has permission to make them accessible
  • The contributing institution makes them accessible for education and research purposes as a legal fair use, or
  • There are no known restrictions on use

To learn what your responsibilities are if you’d like to use the materials, please contact the contributing institution directly or fill out our contact form  and we will put you in touch with the contributing institution who holds the materials in which you are interested. Just select "Image and Use Requests" from the category drop down menu and include a link to the item in question within the body of your message.

If you believe that you are the rights holder of a particular item and you have questions or concerns about the item being displayed, please select "Copyright Concerns" from the category drop down menu and include a link to the item in question within the body of your message. We will be happy to remove material from public view while we address a rights issue, however, we require at least 2 business days to remove said item from public view.
